We
all face "seasons" where we have to make tough choices that
make profound changes in our lives. For Cal Ripken, Jr., the
legendary Ironman of baseball, identifying that season was
never going to be easy. Cal decided sometime during the 2001
Orioles season that it would be his last. He played out his
final season- a season jolted, as was everything in America,
by the cataclysmic attacks on America of 9/11- with a grace
and nobility that precisely reflected his remarkable 21 seasons.
Amazingly, he chose to enter this potentially difficult season
wearing a mike and followed by a film crew. It was the first
time in the history of baseball that a player was allowed
to wear a mike on the field during a game. Filmmaker Mitchell
Scherr has captured Cal's season and its impact on Cal, Kelly,
their children and the people around them, in an intimate
and compelling way.
This remarkable movie has played on ESPN, and has been nominated
for two Emmys. Thanks to Kelly Ripken, Mitchell, David Gavant
and the team at Major League Baseball Productions, we are
screening The Season: Cal Ripken, Jr. especially edited for
this theatrical presentation. We will also show some surprise
"bonus footage" never seen before, and there will be a Q&A
afterward with Mitchell and the Ripkens- Cal, Kelly, Rachel,
and Ryan.
