Screenings:

From
1983 to 1990, Scott Lewis and Gary Winter produced a broadcast spectacle
on New York City's burgeoning public access cable channels. The
show was both ahead of its time, and anachronistic-in the tradition
of programs from the past like Shinding and Hullabaloo, the
program featured live performances by music artists. What makes
this show visionary is the selection of artists-they had to meet
the criteria of being fun, raw, twisted, different, intense, and
independent. This tribute to the Scott and Gary Show, by legendary
documentary filmmaker, Jeff Krulik features clips from The Ben
Vaughn Combo from December, The Beastie Boys (with Kate,
presently of Luscious Jackson, on the drums), ½ Japanese,
and Butthole Surfers. The Scott and Gary Show embraced
the punk (anti)aesthetic to create a show that was unslick, unscripted,
unfamiliar, and unbelievable.
Tidbit:
During a Q&A at the New York Underground Film Festival, Scott and
Gary revealed that one of their biggest disappointments was when
scheduling conflicts prevented fellow Maryland Film Festival
2000 participant Jonathan Richman from performing on their show.
Bios:
Scott Lewis and Gary Winter created The Scott and Gary Show
on New York City public access that featured performances by many
of best artists in underground music. Though most episodes were
filmed in New York City, several shows were produced in suburban
Washington, D.C.
D.C.-based Jeff
Krulik has been making documentaries for over 15 years. From Heavy
Metal Parking Lot to I Created Lancelot Link he turns
his camera on segments of America that are not-often represented.
In the process he has become one of the leading makers of ironic
pop-culture shorts.
Jad
Fair has been one of the most influential performers in the underground
music scene for over 20 years, crafting consistently challenging
and exciting releases whether with ½ Japanese, as a solo
artist, or in collaboration with other like-minded talents. His
most recent release is a collaboration with Jason Willett, Enjoyable
Songs.
