Saturday, April 29, Noon, Charles 5

Synopsis:
Sick of his TV-addicted, bickering family and scared of his potential future career in telemarketing, an automobile-phobic new-age self-searcher leaves Nebraska and heads to Nepal in search of spiritual better-ness. He returns to find nothing has changed, including himself. However, the prayer stones he brings back with him turn out to be very valuable, and as a result, he and his girlfriend are terrorized by Columbian jewel thieves and a roving gang of kick-boxers. It all ends in a final showdown at Carhenge, a Stonehenge replica made out of old, discarded automobiles. Part road movie, part twenty-something/non-slacker comedy, and even part educational thanks to cameo performances by the mayor of Omaha and the governor of Nebraska, Omaha (the movie) is a funny, off-beat example of what independent cinema can be.-Skizz Cyzyk

Tidbit:
Omaha (the movie) was one of the films that formed the first Slamdance, a festival started by filmmakers whose works were rejected by Sundance. Now in its 7th year, Slamdance was described by Vanity Fair as one of the eight most important film festivals in the world. Even though Dan has become synonymous with Slamdance-he hosts the screenings in Park City Utah, his film received its broadcast premiere on the Sundance Channel! "Go figure," comments Dan.

Bio:
Director Dan Mirvish and producer Dana Altman (grandson of Robert) made Omaha (the movie) in their home state of Nebraska with the intention of getting into Sundance and starting their careers in the film industry. Something else happened along the way. When Mirvish and some other first-time directors were all rejected by Sundance in 1995, they decided to join forces and the Slamdance Film Festival was born, thus ushering in a new movement of guerilla exhibition the independent film world has yet to recover from. Dan hasn't direct a feature film since…though he is now a father, and has another film (Stamp & Deliver) ready to roll as soon as the funding is finalized. In the meantime, he wears many hats as Slamdance's Co-Founder-At-Large.

Short:
Endgame (dir. Luis Camara Silva, 8 min., 35mm.) The mating habits of homo sapiens are explored when a friendly game of chess between a man and a woman becomes a battle of the sexes.
