Introduction to the Screening.
Clean,
Shaven is first and foremost a character study of a schizophrenic
who undergoes an emotional crisis in his life. Plagued by hallucinations,
Peter Winter flees an obscured, violent past and returns to his
hometown in search of his daughter who is deliberately being kept
from him. As he searches for her, his world becomes increasingly
chaotic, and he starts to self-destruct. Director, Lodge Kerrigan,
uses visual and particularly sound design to mirror the destructive,
fractured experiential nature of schizophrenia.
Tidbit:
"There is not the slightest bit of irony in my selection this year."-John
Waters
Bio:
Legendary director John Waters is Baltimore nobility. William Burroughs
ordained him the "Pope of Trash." He has been making and showing
films in Baltimore since the mid-sixties. His counterculture masterpiece
Pink Flamingos made Divine a star and garnered Waters international
acclaim and noteriety. In a single moment at the film's conclusion,
he trumped Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali, and made cinematic history.
Since then Waters has continued to shock and amuse audiences with
his own brand of humor. First with more midnight movies like Female
Trouble, Desperate Living, and the Odorama sensation Polyester,
then in 1988 with the (gasp!) "family film" Hairspray. As Waters
continues to write and direct such films as Cry Baby, Serial Mom,
and Pecker, he has published four books. Appears regularly on the
late-night talk show circuit, is a renowned public speaker who lectures
on college campuses, and shows his photographic art in galleries
around the world. His latest film Cecil B. Demented will hit theaters
later this year.
